About The Detroit Partnership
The Detroit Partnership (DP) is a student-run service learning organization at the University of Michigan that is dedicated to enacting positive change through partnerships between the Ann Arbor and Detroit communities. What began ten years ago with a handful of students dreaming of what might be accomplished if college students spent a day serving in Detroit has transformed into a year-round commitment that includes weekly programs, education events, and community organizing. Today, students from The Detroit Partnership lead one of the most successful and distinguished service-learning organizations at the University of Michigan and strive to be a national model for university-urban partnerships. The Detroit Partnership's history is not just a tale of remarkable growth. It is also a story about students finding a way to make a difference in the community for more than just one day. The organization now strives to impact people's lives on a daily basis, as our mission statement reveals: "We, The Detroit Partnership, exist to unite the University of Michigan and greater community with the Detroit community, to create lasting change, and to maintain fulfilling partnerships by addressing social issues surrounding Detroit through active service learning."
The Detroit Partnership works side by side with over thirty schools, non-profits, and churches in Detroit to fulfill its mission through diverse programs offering tutoring, youth mentoring, adult ESL, job preparation, neighborhood revitalization, and other services. Students on the Planning Team of the Detroit Partnership manage each one of these programs with the goal of strengthening the strong relationships already forged between our campus and the Brightmoor and Southwest neighborhoods where we work. City residents warmly greet the 150+ students the DP brings into these communities on a weekly basis. This partnership allows us to jointly instigate change.
Your time commitment to The Detroit Partnership as a member is completely up to you. Our weekly programs are available for those who would like to make a stronger commitment to service learning. We offer weekly programs Monday-Saturday, so you are sure to find something to fit your schedule. Although our one-time programs and education events on campus are great for everyone, they are especially beneficial for individuals whom are unable to make a weekly commitment, yet are still interested in service learning and Detroit.
The DP is especially well known for our two major events. In the fall we help organize the annual One Stop Shop Food and Clothing Drive, which last year provided Detroit residents with over $50,000 worth of food supplies and clothes, in addition to a resource fair advertising services such as free tax-filing help and foreclosure prevention assistance. Our yearly headlining event, Detroit Partnership Day, is held each spring. This event is a celebration of our relationships with partner organizations in the City of Detroit and is a day of service learning that involves over 1,000 UM students and community members. The DP is also committed to raising awareness on social issues pertaining to Detroit throughout campus. Our education team sponsors lectures, film viewings, discussions and more throughout the semester.
-- I highly encourage you to get involved with this great cause however you can. Detroit has faced its share of trying times, and this year is no exception; however, as long as there is passion and strength in its neighborhoods and communities, the city will remain strong. The Detroit Partnership's movement is gaining momentum, but the work we can do alone is dwarfed by the potential change we can enact through a community-driven approach. Whether your resources are measured in passion for Detroit, volunteer hours, or dollars, we greatly value any contribution to our mission. Please feel free to contact either our director team or me at any time for information about our organization and its objectives, or for ways to get involved. Thanks for checking out The Detroit Partnership, and I hope you take the opportunity to work with our organization in the near future.
